There has been so much craze around Superfoods in the last few years that it is important to take a step back and wonder – what makes Superfoods so special?

We know they are popular for being nutritionally dense, in other words, carry a lot more Vitamins, Minerals and Antioxidants for a small calorific value as compared to other foods. That’s great, but the problem with most popular Superfoods is that they are pretty expensive like Avocado, Blueberries and Goji Berries and therefore, out of reach for most of us.

Well, fear not! We have shortlisted a quick list of 6 Superfoods which are available across the country and can make their way to your dinner table on the tightest of budgets.

Sesame Seeds

A favourite pick for salad dressings, Sesame seeds are rich in protein and fiber. They add crunch and flavour to stir-fried vegetables, and tofu and are very often used in Asian cooking.

We love sesame seeds because these seeds are rich in Zinc which boosts Collagen production which lifts, firms and tightens your skin. These seeds are also a great source of Omega 6, Calcium, phosphorus, Iron, Vitamins B and E and Anti-Oxidants for healthy, glowing skin.

Ghee

A cooking staple, used for centuries and found in every Indian kitchen. Ghee or clarified butter made headlines when Kourtney Kardashian claimed that drinking an entire cup of it in the morning led to smooth digestion. Ghee even made it to the Oscar goodie bags which were handed out at the end of the award ceremony. So what’s all the fuss about?

To begin with, Ghee is nothing short of a nutrient bomb. It's packed with Vitamins A, D and E which boost immunity, increase stamina and take care of your liver. Ghee contains butyric acid which cleans your gut and strengthens your digestive system. Not only does cooking with ghee make other foods palatable and render a rich nutty flavour, but on its own, is said to trigger weight loss and helps with blood glucose regulation as well.

Coconut Oil

We consider this oil to be sheer magic. While most celebrities endorse this enthusiastically as an add on to salads and smoothies, Virgin Coconut Oil can be consumed on its own as well. Coconuts are known to be the richest source of lauric acid, which has outstanding anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties.

Supermodel Miranda Kerr swears by it and calls it her beauty secret for radiant, luminous skin. This oil has also gained popularity for being extremely efficient in speeding up metabolism and fast-tracking weight loss diets.

Moringa

Nicknamed as “Marvellous Moringa”, this nutrient dense superfood contains 47 Anti-Oxidants and 27 Vitamins. Bursting with flavour, Moringa is touted to have 7 times the Vitamin C of an Orange, 4 times the Vitamin A of a Carrot and double the protein of Milk.

30 percent of its dry weight is protein and therefore is a great supplement for those on a purely vegetarian diet. Moringa is friendly on the wallet too as it costs a fraction of the price of Goji Berries and even has 6X the number of Anti-Oxidants compared to them.

Also known as the Drumstick, Moringa when powdered can be mixed with a smoothie or cooked the traditional stir-fried style with garlic and onions.

Turmeric

Golden milk or Turmeric Lattes (turmeric juice mixed with almond milk) was 2016 ‘s drink of choice. Attracting crowds from all over, cafes made this an essential offering on their menus across the world.

This miracle spice became popular for a reason. 100 grams of Turmeric contains 340 percent of the daily recommended intake of Manganese and 517 percent of Iron. It’s also anti-inflammatory and therefore successfully quells any bacterial or viral infections.

There have also been research studies to indicate that Turmeric can even shrink tumours. Now, we don’t know this for sure, but what we do know is taking Turmeric (Haldi in our parlance) in our daily cooking is definitely going to do a lot of good !

Jackfruit

Vibrant, yellow and subtly sweet are the words which come to our mind when we think of this fruit which is native to the south western part of our country.

Popularly known as “kathal”, Jackfruit is known to boost immunity, infuses Anti-Oxidants to tackle free radical damage, regulates blood sugar levels and even strengthens bones.

Rich in Vitamin A,C,E and K, Jackfruit is gaining quick popularity across the world. India is the largest producer of this Superfruit and therefore it only makes sense to capitalize on this and include it in our diets.
